Set of 4 Virginia Arrow-Back Windsor Chairs

Ohio County , Virginia (now WV). Circa 1825. Curved crest rail, turned and flattened thumb back stiles, shaped plank seats, and turned legs and stretchers all with original brown with gold trim paint.  The front legs and stretchers have interesting decorative turnings and the feet terminate on small pads. Some replaced stretchers and one chair with feet repair.  Chairs descended from Archibald Woods (1764-1846), Revolutionary War veteran, member of VA House of Delegates and VA Convention to Ratify the Constitution (1788), Colonel 4th Reg. VA militia during War of 1812, original trustee of Wheeling , founder of North Western bank, land owner and speculator.

Great Set of 6 Southern Plank Bottom Chairs

New Market, Virginia.  Shenandoah Valley. Circa 1840. Attributed to the Clinedinst family of chair makers.  Original grain painting, stenciling, and gold trim paint.  One board seats are 2 inches thick and show great hand planed tool marks underneath.  The horizontal rails show excellent tool marks where they are fitted into the stiles.  Wonderful natural wear.  All chairs are tight, with no losses or repairs.  These chairs are ready for another 100 years of use.

Mecklenburg County, Virginia. 19th Century.  Influenced by the Johnson family of chair makers.  Rear stiles with decorative turnings and distinctive mushroom caps.  Nicely shaped front stiles and arm supports.  Pegged.  Seat is an older replacement.
