William & Mary Blanket Chest
|
|
Shenandoah
Valley.
Circa 1730. The walnut chest, in original finish, is Germanic
in appearance and construction details. The case is constructed
with very large exposed dovetails; the base molding is applied with
wooden pegs; and the original lock is Germanic. The feet are
original; each is beautifully turned with 2 decorative scratch rings
around the largest portion of the ball foot. The lower portion
of the chest has 2 dovetailed, lipped drawers featuring a thumbnail
edge. The 2 board top has a thumbnail edge and battens at
each end. The blacksmith made strap hinges, applied with rivets,
are early replacements, circa 1780. The profile of the original,
off-set butterfly hinges, are visible. The interior features a
till with lid over 2 dovetailed drawers. Rose-head nails secure
the bottom as well as the interior bottom to the chest. The
escutcheon and brasses are original. The bottom, back, drawer
bottom/sides/back, and till are poplar. The sides, bottom, and
back of small interior drawers are hard yellow pine.

County
. Circa 1820. Cherry
primary and poplar secondary with old refinish. Mortise and tenoned
construction. Rectangular
case with medial divider separating the front into 2 panels over 2
drawers. The single end
panels are highlighted by beveled rails.
The re-secured center divider is shaped.
The high style, intricately turned feet are constructed of 2
pieces of cherry and applied with a block to the bottom of the
chest. The feet on the
left facing side of the chest are original, with bug damage to the
rear foot. The opposite
feet must have suffered more severe bug damage and have been
expertly reconstructed using about a third of the original turnings.
The hinged top has cleated ends and is attached to a
stationery piece across the back.
The locks on case and drawers are original.
The drawers are dovetailed with chamfered bottoms riding in
rabbets and nailed at the back.
The bottom of the chest is two large boards sitting in
rabbets, slid in from the back of the piece.
