Petersburg, Virginia Key Basket

Virginia; Petersburg.  Circa 1840.   The key basket is boat shaped and leather throughout.  The interior is lined with black canvas-like material.  The exterior is decorated with fine tooling and stitching.  The top edge is finished.  There are some losses to the edging and the handle has a very early reattachment.

 Length: 9 Ύ”; Width:  5 Ό”; Height: 6” to top of handle.

 $3,800

The key basket was originally owned by Alexander Donnan, a lawyer residing and practicing in Petersburg, Virginia during the middle of the 19th century.  Donnan, born in Scotland in 1818, immigrated with his parents to the United States as an infant and settled in Petersburg.  He attended local schools, the University of Virginia, and studied law under David May, beginning his practice in 1840.  Donnan headed the law firm of Donnan and Hamilton, served on the Petersburg City Council, was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1859, and was also the Vice President of Petersburg Savings and Insurance Co. as well as President of Matoaco Cotton Manufacturers.  He married Anna E. Willson, from Amelia County in December 1850.  They had 9 children.

One of their daughters, Etta Edloe, married Judge William Hodges Mann of Nottoway County .  Etta eventually inherited the key basket, bringing it into the Mann family.  William Hodges Mann was a Confederate veteran (12th VA Infantry), Nottoway County Judge (1870 – 1892), State Senator (1899 – 1909), and Governor of Virginia (1910 – 1914).  As Governor, he attended the 50th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Gettysburg, delivering a keynote speech.  After public service, he became the President of Citizens Bank of Blackstone as well as President of the Bank of Crewe.

The basket was sold to the current owner by a descendant of the Mann family, who still resides in Petersburg.
